I think the main problem is that music access is gated by walled gardens. Imagine if Spotify was a protocol that anyone could build apps on top of and user data was totally composable behind zk or fhe for total user controllable privacy. We'd be having so much fun sharing music that our ears might fall off.

counterpoint: tiktok? I don't use it but it's had a big influence on the pop landscape I think the fundamental problem is that listening to a song takes at minimum like 2 minutes, whereas you can process an image (at least superficially) within less than a second, and a short text post in a handful of seconds. so you can scroll through a feed of those, which doesn't work so well with music because it requires more time

I would say MySpace was pretty solid at that in an indirect way. Being able to have songs play in your profile as people visit, that was rad!

Would be cool to share a track with a link, and receive point/royalties every time a track is added to a new playlist. Also would be cool to replace album art with any thumbnail image when sending.
