I find the interplay of responsibility here โ€”ย between founder and investor โ€” really interesting so, I'm already on the record that I think Luc should have disclosed the $fair private presale at launch. but whatever, I don't think he's malicious or that anyone he tapped to participate is either, and I'm sure they'll come back with better info about whatever token lockup guarantees exist and how they're enforced (he already shared a little about that) I actually think this is a bigger deal: > today we're dropping governance token through @/clanker. think of holders as our board: they call the shots: change the rules or pull the plug. Goal is ultimately full agent autonomy. crucial details yet so vague! in startup-land, the board of directors usually includes large shareholders, but it's theoretically possible to have a board that doesn't own the enterprise at all. *who actually owns the $fair investment pool?* on the other hand: nobody is making you buy anything. I didn't buy anything ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I finished Sebastian Junger's book War last night. The book covers one of the bloodiest theaters of America's campaign in Afghanistan, the remote and treacherous Korengal Valley, focused on the experience of the American soldiers who fought there. Junger also co-directed the movie Restrepo, based on the same stint of embedded reporting. (I watched Restrepo while pregnant, a combination I do not recommend!) Anyway, Junger theorizes that heroism โ€” willingness to die for another member of your tribe โ€” could only evolve once humans developed language, and thus the ability to convey reputations throughout the community, beyond the people who witnessed an act in person. At that point, risking your life for someone else has a possible payoff: if you both survive, the hero wins appropriate accolades (respect โ€”> access to resources, mates, etc.) far beyond what the typical warrior can earn. Interesting idea. Not sure whether I buy it, but interesting.

my career path: - freelance writer doing shitty low-paid gigs - editorial project manager at a vanity press focused on architecture - customer support at [fintech unicorn redacted b/c I got fired, totally deserved it btw] - fancy dog collar sales assistant [got fired from this one too, deserved it a bit less, but eh, wasn't a good fit] - more freelance writing, slightly better gigs because I started getting them via Twitter, started writing about tech / startups - reporter at Inc. Magazine, covering tech / startups - community manager at the Zcash Foundation - sabbatical year making zines full-time (in retrospect, how on earth did I afford this?) - content marketing at now-defunct startup that enabled compliant index-like investing in crypto, working with @cadillion and @jacek incidentally! - content marketing @splits [current]
