I know ghiblifying everything is fun, but it really showcases how if we don’t have effective IP protection for individuals by default we’ve ceded all value from creative generation to pre-existing capital owners with distribution + legal Also we basically turn all artists into interns working “for exposure”

it is likely true that both IP and copyright are already out the window

isn't IP protection a futile endeavour given the non-rivalrous nature of data/information economies? it's why cc0 caught my eyes in the first place, as well as alternative revenue models.

I have to imagine so many artists are either thinking "why bother creating anything if it's just going to be stolen and used for someone else's profit" or more likely "I create for me but I'm not going to share it" which effectively leads to the same result of less art, less thought, less challenging of social structures, in the world... which is super bad.

Yeah I mentioned something along the lines of this a few months ago. It's like not paying researchers of a medicine for their years of research because they are not needed in mass producing a medicine. It disincentivizes further works of creation.

Over the years, I have basically come to the conclusion that anything that is put on the internet, whether it's art, an article, code (or any other form of intellectual property), is no longer your own. Anyone can steal it without consequences, and most of the time, you would not even know about it. And AI just makes it even worse.

What we thought AI would be used for vs what it's actually used for is crazy lol Taking the phrase starving artists to We starve the artists because anyone can do it

If AI infinitely cheapens the digital, because anyone with an idea can now create it, does it not conversely infinitely valorize the physical? So whoever can create physical beauty is the master? Also, many such cases of tech making a class of worker obsolete, just never all of HUMANUTY being yeeted into obsolescence

Historically, there was no copyright and all art was like this by default. Bern convention was not created until 19th century. Since then e.g. Disney has worked hard to extend copyright and kill creativity in the name of big studio profits.

I have lots of thoughts on the matter, many conflicting. What I’m wrestling with now is that AI didn’t actually change anything here. Any artist could have Ghiblified a meme or family portrait. Most people always had the power to envision things in different forms, but only a few had the capacity to realize it. Democratizing that is incredibly empowering. The rules about monetizing work really get blurred though, when it comes to social media and influencer payouts. And AI companies hoarding access to models and profiting while the original artists don’t is certainly not optimal. I think we just need to push further towards democratizing power. Give everyone the power to train an AI model. Give everyone the power to establish ownership and scarcity of digital items (thanks crypto).

Way to make some really great points, Debbie Downer. But seriously valid concerns. It’s fun to dive into these viral AI tools yet overlook the new rw challenges they create. What could some solutions look like?
