I know ghiblifying everything is fun, but it really showcases how if we don’t have effective IP protection for individuals by default we’ve ceded all value from creative generation to pre-existing capital owners with distribution + legal Also we basically turn all artists into interns working “for exposure”

I have lots of thoughts on the matter, many conflicting. What I’m wrestling with now is that AI didn’t actually change anything here. Any artist could have Ghiblified a meme or family portrait. Most people always had the power to envision things in different forms, but only a few had the capacity to realize it. Democratizing that is incredibly empowering. The rules about monetizing work really get blurred though, when it comes to social media and influencer payouts. And AI companies hoarding access to models and profiting while the original artists don’t is certainly not optimal. I think we just need to push further towards democratizing power. Give everyone the power to train an AI model. Give everyone the power to establish ownership and scarcity of digital items (thanks crypto).
