I'm curious, what does it mean to you when someone says: “I’m spiritual but not religious”?

It means that the constructs of spiritual confinement found within religion are not required by those who have experienced spiritual realms that go beyond religious beliefs. Examples of this include those who have had near death experiences which have enabled spiritual belief that may conflict with some religions

the locus of perceived presence of God, as experienced through the lens of that human religious: god is “out there”. subject to the interface that the established construct (religion) provides. spiritual: god is inside. subject to a constant and conscious exploration. the practice is the discovery of it, as you.

Spirituality is about Self-Work. To learn, teach & grow through life. It is about keeping your own 'spirit' alive. It doesn't matter what you do, it depends that it deeply fulfills you, is part of you & serves the world. Religions tell you more how to live life. It is more following someone rather than yourself.

I think it’s one of those instances where ambiguous semantics don’t serve the discussion very well. I looked up “religious” and came up with two different definitions. 1

Cool question, followed. I’m not sure, my guess has always been that they don’t actively associate themselves with a traditional religious group or specific religion. They do however but have spiritual beliefs. Spiritual, meaning the belief that physical existence isn’t all there is to life.

Not subscribing to a belief in a god or gods but feeling a connection to the universe—i.e. sensing a deeper meaning to life than our daily observable (and individualistic) experience on earth

Could mean a lot of things, if I were to say it, I'd say it's a bit like being agnostic with a mix of appreciation for nature

they’re acknowledging the belief in unseen forces and emotional connections to such powers but they don’t subscribe to an organized religion like dudes nailed to crosses and such.
