Yes. American high culture, what little is left, is pure dogshit now. 20 years ago I would have argued that Europeans pay too much attention to (and take too seriously) American pop culture, while ignoring the high literary culture that was the equal of the European: Roth and Vonnegut are pyrotechnic compared to Céline and Gary. Europeans may watch 'Breaking Bad' but they read practically nothing in American literature, journalism, or philosophy. This was an undeserved oversight. Now, sadly, no...there's nobody left worth reading in the US.
