attended back to school for the 5-year-old - met teacher, learned about curriculum, saw other parents teacher explained how major academic goal is to get basics for reading & writing in place before stating a big focus will be cursive writing to which i unwisely chuckled never in my adult life have i gotten such a glare from another adult ๐Ÿ˜ญ

I'm in favor of teaching cursive. There's a lot of research that shows that taking written notes reinforces concepts better than typing, and cursive is far faster to write than print. My sons' school still teaches cursive and that was definitely a selling point! They also teach typing at the same age

I think curriculum for kids should include 10 finger typing instead of cursive writing.

could be a gateway to other areas of creativity though, as Iโ€™m sure you know. e.g. Steve Jobs was notorious for being a fan of calligraphy. One of my fondest memories is the entire notebook my grandfather wrote with pages and pages of beautifully writter cursive letters 1 year before I was about to start school. It set my fundamentals for a methodical and careful approach. Enough core memory sharing on Fc. Back to shitposting! โ˜บ๏ธ

Cursive? Is this a private school? ๐Ÿ‘€ Or is this just how French schools operate?

have they been writing at all so far? Interestingly for me I never felt like I learned โ€œcursiveโ€ itโ€™s just that I learned to write and it happened to be in the cursive style

Oh, poor you. Chuckling in class. In a French school. Did she tell you to write "je ne chuklerai plus" 100 times in cursive? Seriously though, I can understand the chuckle. I love writing by hand, I understand its importance and practicality, too, but I also was not used to this particular focus on this particular way of writing. My kids make beautiful 'z's now, though. When we learned about this, the French teacher even focused on the importance of how the fingers were holding the pen. Or pencil.

* i chuckle at the whole concept of going to school ๐Ÿคฃ * here in the US, schools are going downhill. If you have the privilege you can give them a better education at home in conjunction w/ tutors + online courses + afterschool programs + AP classes in HS = basically, school a la carte
