stop listening to users. observe them, instead. people either give answers they think are expected, cant accurately remember what they’ve done in the past, or under/overestimate what they’ll do in the future.

if you absolutely must directly ask your users what they want: + only ask open ended questions + ask to clarify without suggesting (“can you tell me more?”) + wait 5 sec after they’re done speaking (feels like eternity but gives them time to gather their thoughts)

Don’t give users what they want…give them what they NEED. Also when you record those user testing sessions it’s a game-changer - the entire team can see how users REALLY use their app (spoiler: it’s not the way you intended)

From 10 years experience: “Tell me about the last time you had that issue and how did you deal with it.” -> “I personally don’t have it, but many people do…” If they want a feature otherwise they couldn’t buy: “How do you achieve this currently?” -> “We don’t yet” The noise is real.

I mean you should be doing both no? Listen to them, observe them, then see what lines up and what doesn’t If a behavior you observe is one they’ve specifically told you about, why would you not go in on that

I observed someone watching a show on their phone attached to their windshield while driving. 0% chance they would have told the phone windshield mount company that the full range of motion is important so they can catch up on "The Bold and the Beautiful" in between Uber pick ups.

I cannot recommend enough actually video taping people using your product with minimal guidance and then rewatching the session. Sometimes people do not verbalize but you can see them getting lost or frustrated.

I've observed this pattern in past user testing sessions, and I've urged others to observe how users navigate the interface rather than relying solely on their verbal feedback.

To an extent. Listening is also part of the observing. I often speak to people who are not even remotely aware of the questions they’d be asked, no time to prepare pre-made answer.

You can do user interviews, but the main focus should be on identifying the problem. Then it's your job to solve that problem for them.
