short moving to usa / big cities to chase career long staying close to your parents & family life is too short to spend the short overlap when your parents are healthy and you are a grown up adult to spend it grinding for an O1 in san francisco (obv doesn't apply to americans)

This blog post hit me hard. Worth a read, but TLDR: Many people will have spent over 90% of their total lifelong quality time with family by the time they graduate high school https://waitbutwhy.com/2015/12/the-tail-end.html

+1 My parents are from America. I moved to the Middle East for work for two years. Soul crushing. Ended up moving back to be closer to family and start my own. PS there’s nothing inherently wrong with where I was. Just chasing things for the wrong reasons crushed my soul.

gm, If I may. I’m from the CO mountains - ski bum, Deadhead. ‘91 I went out to Silicon Valley to join a little startup working on what’s now Siri. I stayed for 2 weeks, split. It just wasn’t my scene. No regrets. I’ve always followed my heart - not my wallet. It’s been a great trip. May it happen to you,

I've been staring at this cast for 5m now. In some sense it's true. But America has spiritually-nerdsniped me and I have to go there "Americans eventually find their way to America"

this is true even if you live in america. big difference between being a short drive and a short flight away. and big difference between being a short flight and a long flight. i’m a short (1 hour) flight away from the parents but would like it to be back to a drive in the next few years.

This arguably applies to Americans... I live 2500 miles from my parents An underrated part of living near your parents is having a baby is 10x easier if they can help out. Fortunately my wife's parents live in town, but wish mine were closer
