I am beginning to believe that this may be the BIGGEST difference in types of humans: People who are honest with themselves vs. People who lie to themselves This isn't even related to intelligence (although very wise people seem to be honest with themselves more frequently, bc they realize the truth will always come out, with enough time). We usually define "honest" as "honest toward others". But actually, the really critical thing is whether you are honest with yourself. And in any case: If you are not honest with yourself, you can not be honest with others – except by chance.

Perhaps. I tend to think the biggest difference is the degree of self-awareness people possess. It’s true that to be self-aware honesty is required. But lies aren’t required for a lack of self-awareness. It’s an act of omission.

Lying to yourself could be a way to cope with low self-esteem. It hurts no matter what because you can end up delusional, and when people tell you that you are wrong, you will feel attacked because it doesn't matter what your truth has become. Knowing your faults and limits is essential to growth and self-improvement.

I find that people who are smart and lack wisdom are prone to dishonesty towards themselves. Very dangerous position to be in for themselves and others. Folks tend to build a life around such people which can lead to disastrous consequences. I've seen it so many times happening to others and I'm always amazed how folks actively seek out confidence in overly-confident people. It's like offshoring own's life to others.

I'm not sure i understand how it's possible to lie to oneself. You can tell yourself something that isn't true, but you'll know that it's a lie. Is that what you mean? Can you give an example?

I always assume my natural inclination is to lie to myself, and so I've developed a lot of habits/tricks to make it very hard for me to lie to myself.
