That the very thing that makes it work (ETH having value) is the thing that works the hardest against it when it comes to coordination (quickest way to get rich is to build an alt-L1 rather than build on what we have. people feel like they β€œmissed” the ICO and want that return)

Protocol sprawl. Lot's of non-standard protocols for the sake of designing protocols. Solidity ABI/RLP/SSZ. Part of why I believe we don't see much client diversity beyond geth. Some parts do have unique constraints (and thus need unique sols.) but many don't.
