an observation (that may come off as insensitive): some of the people with the strongest emotional reaction to the recent market downturn are those whose near-term lives won't materially change. no immediate plans to buy a home, retire, pay for school, etc. no liquidity needs, no LPs to whom they need to deliver.

Idk i think virtually everyone's near-term lives will be affected. It may not be as dramatic as many spout, but imo we will all take a financial hit. Even if it's 'only' groceries, household goods, clothing prices, etc.

I don't think that's accurate necessarily. But my presumption is that companies are going to have to fold because their entire strategy is around cheap imported goods and people will lose their jobs

Facts! Most are grieving potential, not loss. They were rich in theory and now feel robbed of a future they didn’t actually own yet

I'd estimate this is because these are the same people addicted to following the mainstream news that incentivizes fear. People watch and "the news" can sell more advertising.

I think it’s a proximity response too. It’s really a Rorschach test of growth mindset… those of us who didn’t or couldn’t buy the shit out the market in Mar 2020 are now like

I don't know anybody freaking out about the market downturn, those are probably mostly very wealthy people who own a lot of stocks and like you said, their lives won't materially change much. What I see people lamenting is the coming massive inflation of food, housing, medical supplies, and everything else we need to live our lives on top of already brutal cost of living crunch and real wages stagnant since the 1970s. People can't figure out how to pay rent and avoid medical or student debt bankruptcy, that's the core economic unease right now not the prices.

a more holistic read might consider people’s interpretation of downstream implications. deflationary pressures (whether quantitatively- or emotionally-inspired) affect everyone even if brokerage accounts are relatively spared

I am inclined to agree. But the problem would be that in a world where shock value and doom scrolling reign supreme, and sometimes, the more shallow (attention seeking) they become, the less of a chance that hope will come through.

Probably overstacked on leverage as well for no good reason other than feeling like they have to “make it” right now

Many folks with the loudest megaphones are much more equipped to handle price variance and uncertainty than the average person, especially globally. I personally had been in a big transition period before all of this that was causing me financial stress. I've basically given up on getting that solved and settled.

Sure that might be some people. Plenty of the rest of us are in the first order of impact of these policies, and pretty much everyone will be in the second, third and so forth. The reason this pause came today is because we were within days of supply chain impacts becoming unavoidable. It's not just about finances, it's literally about availability and cost of goods which impacts everyone.

Certain circles do that because it is their job. But if they are "emotional", they got issues.
