genuine question: how did U2 become like the biggest band in the world (iTunes releases, Sphere residency, etc) when i (and a lot of people i ask) can’t really name more than two songs? disclaimer: with or without you is a good song

Because they sounded different. What the Edge was doing on guitar was just different - people noticed and started listening - Bono’s lyrics were relevant and of the zeitgeist - they earned their attention

If you’re my age you can name more than 2 and probably listened to Joshua Tree on repeat.

U2 hit critical mass when Late Boomers and Gen X were cranking up college radio and blasting mix tapes in their dorms. Back then, college radio wasn’t just a vibe—it was a cultural gatekeeper. Now those same fans are grown, paid, and ready to relive the soundtracks of their youth in ultra-HD at the Sphere. U2 is no longer just a band—they’re a legacy act, a cultural institution. Think Springsteen. Think Eagles. Soon, they’ll be joined in that rarefied air by others from the alt-rock: The Cure, Depeche Mode, Green Day, Weezer. These aren’t just concerts. They’re modern rituals for a gen that didn’t grow up with the sound of Grooveboxes, 808’s or Serato but still believe music can save your soul.

They're an average of a huge number of people's music tastes. Sweet spot of novelty and familiarity over decades.

being overtly political/activist and aligned with the zeitgeist at the time helped a lot, remember all the pics of bono hanging out with bill clinton etc? thom yorke wasn't getting that kind of pump also arguably the sound was much more tuned for mainstream (rather than experimental or counterculture)

I think the real question here is why you (and a lot of people you ask) can only name 2 songs. It's a generational thing, in the end. U2 was simply put the biggest act when I grew up. But that was a long time ago. Anyway, sometimes it's better to enjoy the music than to ask why. Especially on a Beutiful Day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co6WMzDOh1o

you must not know many folks from ireland or boston. besides having tons of hits they were always early adopters of cutting edge (no pun intended) concert technology, really leaning into what screens could do before most. this helped establish a lot of ties with tech companies + after Live Aid Bono leaned into the world ambassador messianic thing so they were uniquely set up as the kind of perfect act to package and sell with new products.

Hard agree. There's something there for Gex Xers who didn't vibe with grunge / nirvana but literally nobody else as far as I know.
