genuine question: how did U2 become like the biggest band in the world (iTunes releases, Sphere residency, etc) when i (and a lot of people i ask) can’t really name more than two songs? disclaimer: with or without you is a good song

U2 hit critical mass when Late Boomers and Gen X were cranking up college radio and blasting mix tapes in their dorms. Back then, college radio wasn’t just a vibe—it was a cultural gatekeeper. Now those same fans are grown, paid, and ready to relive the soundtracks of their youth in ultra-HD at the Sphere. U2 is no longer just a band—they’re a legacy act, a cultural institution. Think Springsteen. Think Eagles. Soon, they’ll be joined in that rarefied air by others from the alt-rock: The Cure, Depeche Mode, Green Day, Weezer. These aren’t just concerts. They’re modern rituals for a gen that didn’t grow up with the sound of Grooveboxes, 808’s or Serato but still believe music can save your soul.
