went through this report. here’s what i found fascinating (horrific?): - RXBARS (which i never ate bc they always got stuck in my teeth) has the highest level of DEHP, a liquid used to make PVC softer and more flexible - one (just one!!) boba tea from Boba Guys has the equivalent of 1.2 years of safe daily BPA consumption; commonly used in plastic and epoxy and an endocrine disruptor - Diet Coke and Whole Foods organic chicken breast had the highest levels of BBP, a phthalate, often used to make plastics and banned in kids toys and cosmetics; the chicken threw me through a loop — could be due to packaging, processing equipment, chicken feed, etc. - both Straus and Clover Organic Whole Milk had the highest levels of DMP, commonly used as insect repellent; makes sense if it is used against livestock flies on cows, but still bad - hot food in a takeout container had 5x the amount of DIBP compared to the same exact food served straight on a plate; DIBP is low volatility plasticizer

Half my health problems disappear in Japan. I’m convinced the American food supply chain is poisoned and it’s slowly killing us. I’ve been back for a handful of days, cooking all my own food and I feel like shit all over again.

I'm sometimes dubious of "X, which is often used in non-food-thing Y", I can't tell how informative that is. "The gatorade contains water, an element which composed 80% of Hitler by volume."

I feel like this explains my random down days that I can't explain. I try to avoid foods that could have these "forever chemicals" - by at least reading labels, researching and buying from the farmers market, spending more time prepping pieces of produce vs package, etc. Still, there's just some meals that I have here in america where on face pasts the basics checks, And I feel terrible after eating it. Why! Why!

I vacillate between wanting to be informed and just realizing it’s too late for me anyway and drinking the Diet Coke.

I stopped buying store brand chicken (even WF) when I read that they could just be using Purdue or any other distributor. Hopefully Mary’s is ok (and I try to do jidori from Gelsons when I can)

I highly recommend Chris van Tulleken ultra Processed People on that theme. It's a book about how the food industry is designing foods and then pushing them onto people. It's shocking, but it completely stopped me from ever eating ready meals from the frozen section for good (not that I did this a whole lot anyway) and I started studying the ingredient lists of things when shopping. As a rule of thumb if there's things I don't understand, I don't buy. Then again, this is a luxury I can afford, unfortunately processed foods are often the cheaper option....a whole other outrageous topic of how the food industry preys on the poorer people.
