okay let’s say you’re hosting a meetup in LA. the venue tells you that there’s room for 50 - 60 people to comfortably stand and chat. how many people would you let RSVP yes before turning on the wait list?

2/3 show up if free pizza and beer. 1/3 if capped free drinks is the general heuristic iirc (was precovid, and assumes not first event for new-ish community)

things I'd factor: a) day/time of the week, b) strength of the network, c) distance to venue for the median person (esp in LA) depending on those, I'd go 20-50% over the venue limit

If it’s a free RSVP and during regular week, I would aim for 3x capacity (without +1s) If it’s during a conference, I would aim for 5x -8x capacity.

I’d do 200 for a web3/LA combo with open invites (ie not 1:1 DMs). A 25% show rate is decent for this combo 150 to play it safe or if you think people will want to bring friends If it’s not web3, in LA, or if it was a tight knit/personal invite these numbers change. Also if it’s the 1st of an ongoing meetup.
