asking for a friend (me), does the phrase “network state” excite anyone beyond technocrats and crypto bros?

👋 I think it is coolest thing happening in crypto I don't understand why so many people are dunking on it ? Especially in current government environment & general stagnation. I don't understand how are governance & coordination experiments bad ? #networksStateCitizen

The crypto gals get pretty excited too —especially the DAO-ish ones.

it doesn't really excite me because when I try to visualize what it actually physically looks like it I have a hard imagining anything other than walled compounds or private-micro cities at odds with local populations, hostile even. fundamentally set apart. too close to a cult for my tastes.

Pretty sure those are the only circles that even know the term.

Are you telling me people aren’t going to jump at the chance to join a trustless, cryptographically ensured network state??

@hillis had a really good take on this when he chatted with @chase's podcast. Well worth listening to: https://www.othersidepod.xyz/episode/71

I think most non-tech people don't get the phrase. I've been writing a serialized cyberpunk novel and called this distributed and powerful country Diaspora :)

it's a good technical descriptor, like how the USA is a "Federal Republic". It will not be the thing that people identify with. The actual instantiations will be amazing symbols with an accompanying ideology—and that will probably be people's first touch point.

It doesn’t excite me… Feels like everything will be a network in the long run. So if this is some vision of the future, it isn’t considering the trend of networks becoming the default.

Religion is kind of a network state. "Network state" is just the technocrat term for it.

What I think is that it doesn't really excite even most technocrats or crypto bros, but they echo this sentiment as virtue signaling It's basically the Sapiens of web3
