i just went to a CVS in venice there’s a presumably homeless guy, super tame he fills up two backpacks with snacks and drinks, leaves without paying “did he just steal all of that?” i ask “ya, several times a week, what’re we gonna do” the cashier and *security guards* reply

yea, very common at the target in silver lake. they have a threshold under which they don't engage (whatever someone can carry with two hands or something like that), because it's not worth the financial, political and legal liability the security guard is there to protect employees i guess

always surprising to see this kind of petty theft happen so casually still, drinks & chips are a whole lot cheaper than what it would cost to police retail stores aggressively, not to mention the burden on legal resources from processing people like that or the enormous cost of incarceration

the backend of stores will be automated with mobile order delivery through a window or package within a few decades. in-person shopping will be bougie or small towns

saw this many times at san francisco walgreens, first time i was confused and surprised, then kinda disturbed by the lawlessness of it. i think its because its one of the first things you learn as a child, felt like a betrayal of the most basic civil order.

When I worked retail we legit couldn't do anything but "offer excellent service" to hopefully deter them from stealing. We couldn't call security or anything Oh and the retailer made a formal announcement that staff couldn't stop theft because of past incidents that made the news
