Big believer in this part: "The holy grail will be when users consume content not knowing wtf is happening in the back." e.g., We've been wondering if we could pull off a purchase flow for coins without showing any numbers. A lot of the numbers just serve as an index: How much support do I want to give? How popular is this post or writer, or how relevant is it to my interests? There may be ways to answer these without showing precise numbers. This type of flow may not work well for speculators, but hopefully it would be great for people who care about the writer or writing (which yes, maybe is a smaller market now, but IMO could be a much larger market opportunity than pure speculators / bots).

Back with the 38th edition of Paragraph Picks, spotlighting some great writing over the past week or so. There's so much great writing on Paragraph these days — it's been awesome to experience the growing difficulty of choosing only six posts! Onto this week's picks ⤵️

How can we help writers earn meaningful, reliable income? Open edition NFTs haven’t quite gotten us there, so we have to find a better solution. We wrote a couple posts on why we think coins may be a better model (part 1 below) — we'd love to hear what you think. https://paragraph.com/@reidtandy/rethinking-how-writers-get-paid

I love how honest @yb is about his writing journey. Earning a living writing on the internet is a massively difficult career path to choose: writing on the internet is a vulnerable act, and then asking people to pay your for it?? Incredibly uncomfortable and difficult. Deep admiration and respect for what Yash is doing — please check out his post and share your thoughts.

The internet today, as wonderful as it is, definitely feels a bit broken. Whether we can fix some of the core issues remains to be seen, but it's a very fun, compelling problem space to be working in.

I think previous attempts at micro transactions haven't worked bc it forces people to make too many purchase decisions, not bc trx fees were too high (though that *definitely* didn't help and made it *way* harder to experiment). Very cool to see a shot at combining a bunch of micro-trx into one decision.

Went to Trey solo show last night. It was one of the most special musical events I've ever been to. He played a ton of Phish songs, some of which you'd expect & love at an acoustic show - Waste, Brian & Robert, Billy Breathes, Dirt. But YEM, Fluff, Divided Sky, Cavern, Tube, CDT, Rift - these were *incredible* to hear acoustic. It really emphasized Trey's musicianship, seemed like he was having a blast. The sound in the venue was heavenly. Won't sound as great here obviously, but still fun to listen to: https://archive.org/details/trey2025-03-30.peluso.flac24/trey2025-03-30t29.flac

Testing something out, but also people should check out this post from @adrienne, highlighting how AI risks accelerating the flattening effect & making it hard for distinct cultures to survive. https://paragraph.com/@adrienne/what-ai-cant-learn-a-case-for-preserving-nomadic-culture

Pretty incredible traction in just one month. I think the amount of traders is what's most surprising to me, much higher than I would have guessed. I'm sure there was quite the pop around launch, so curious to see where this plateaus.

This is a really fun feature. For most newsletters & blogs, it's very hard to spark meaningful discussion on the post page. It's much more impactful & natural to share and discuss posts on a social feed. But it's also great to see that discourse on the post page!
