We've been thinking a lot about what a digital coffee table or bookshelf would look like... Part of the reason Letterboxd and Goodreads (despite a pretty rough UX) have done well is because that tap into powerful forms of self-expression, and being able to find & connect with other people that share your interests & taste in stuff that matters to you. We saw these dynamics in a big way at Crunchyroll too. Would love to hear any ideas for what we could do along these lines.

One of my favorite parts from talking with Judd Legum was him talking about his disciplined approach to writing and wanting to establish Popular Information as a serious professional product. That often means writing when you may not feel like it! I would say this is more applicable to those looking to earn a living through their writing or creative efforts, and less true for those who are doing it for fun, as a creative outlet, and/or not dependent on the earnings from their work.

One of the writers I enjoy talking to the most is Judd Legum of Popular Information. Judd always struck me as someone who loved experimenting, trying new things, and digging into the business side of running a newsletter. As I found out, it’s more that he recognizes having a sustainable business allows him to do the things he actually enjoys: researching & writing, and the impact that has on the world.
