While I absolutely love the work I do, one major downside is I don’t really get any time to experiment anymore or even read up on what others are building. Trying to set aside and commit to a minimum of 2 hours a day for it. Any other advice on how to stay up-to-date?

Sounds like a good plan. Also, re others’ projects: bookmark anything of interest you encounter. Then dedicate some time, perhaps weekly, to skim each and go deep in the most appealing. Anything that still appeals after a period from first discovery usually means it’s worth caring about.

Twitter lists, the right youtube channels, blogs.. Just restrict your feeds to cut out noise. Atleast that’s what I do. In the end, there is no way to be absolutely sure you haven’t missed something.

rather than spending two hours a day (which is a lot!), maybe try setting aside mornings on Sundays. It’s easier to get work done in a big chunk of time and you won’t beat yourself up if you happen to have a busy day @ work and miss your quota

Love this question, @slokh. Rather than advice, I have a few questions: - why is this coming up for you now? - what would a more successful “balance” look like? - what’s getting in the way, that you haven’t addressed yet? I’d be happy to extend a complimentary coaching session if you want to jam further. Cheer

I wrestled with this last year following a change in role and focus. No practical how-to advice (sorry), as see it more of a mindset shift. I am no longer fixing an acute problem or saving the day, I am defining a defensible strategy and ensuring a wider collection of commercial resources can come together around it

Curation engines For me this means a few different things - it could mean curating twitter lists, bookmarks etc and keeping things lean that way - or using others as a means of curation, I think it’s possible to keep up to date with 75% of what’s going on in a domain if you follow the right 10% of people

I’ve found the simplest accelerator for this is nurturing deep, long-term friendships with fiercely - and eclectically- curious people You’ll find each other really interesting and scheduling is organic

If it were me, setting aside specifically 2 hours a day would make that experimentation time feel like a chore and kind of kill my creativity / pleasure.

This is hard, I feel you, I deal with the same thing. I think you need to know when “you’re at your best”, which for me is mornings. I reserve time when I’m sharpest for myself and work on my own things then, and try to keep it open what I want to work on, not what I “should” do
