This lovely comment from @chriscocreated makes me wish for more sustainable ways to fund, organize, + preserve thoughtful curation work done by *humans* (not algos) in the FC ecosystem. 

Psychologically, the hardest thing about casting for me is that all my casts vanish into the algo-driven "exhaust stream," never to be seen or commented on again. 

I could compile topic-specific best-of recs such as @cameron's canonical advice-for-newbies article on a website (if I had sufficient funding for that work), but discovery would still be a problem.

There's value leak happening here because there's no viable "slowcore" + positive-sum path (AFAIK) to leverage the power of compounding for previous curation work.

What if I had a space to curate custom selections of great work in ways that:

1) reduce existing cognitive load for the curator (or at least don't *add* to it), and
2) maximize chances of discovery by interested readers at their leisure?

I know there are gigabrains working on this. Just thinking aloud.

Two weeks into my new job, as I wrote a Google sheets macro, I realised, “wait this is the first time I’m actually getting paid to do the shit I did for fun over the weekend”

Indeed, when I tell people how I learnt to do the stuff I do at my job, I say “yeah in my previous job I ran a magazine but I did coding / data projects on the weekend”

And I’ve recently realised that one of my side projects from last year could save hundreds of hours of work at the company too

A vacation lesson about why cork is Certified Slow. 

In Portugal, where ~50% of the world’s cork is produced, a tree is planted to be first harvested only 25 years later. 

This first harvest, while useful, is the poorest quality the tree will produce.

While I was a VC for 6 years, I spent a lot of time meeting with founders. I saw a LOT of burnout that wasn't always talked about publicly

One takeaway for me going into founding a company was even though the hours are really long, I make sure to never skip taking care of my mental and physical health (or ever feel guilty about it) in order to maintain long term pace. This is what works for me

e.g. no matter how chaotic things get, I make sure to do a daily 15 min walk minimum, take 2-3 fitness classes per week, and make sure every week I'm fitting in some things that make me happy (e.g. seeing family/friends, eating good food, etc). Still working on improving my sleep though

Balance is a skill learnt for more than riding a bike. 

I’ll add to this excellent advice ‘take an extended break now and again’. 

And I speak live from the field - holidays are wonderful!

The slow question is, will I keep my streak on holiday?
