Holy fuck, I’ve had 3 North Korean/Chinese hackers apply for jobs with plausible resumes. It’s really obvious when they get on a call. Stay safe out there founders. @mikedemarais.eth now I know what you were talking about.

I'm very proud to share that my latest venture, StepChange.work, has announced $4M in seed funding from a stellar group of investors, including Kindred Ventures, The General Partnership, Ritual Capital and Liquid 2 Ventures. Niall O'Higgins and I were inspired to start StepChange after our experience working at Coinbase, where we watched observability costs across the industry skyrocket. We decided there had to be a better way and have been hard at work over the last year, leveraging our team’s collective experience to help engineering teams boost their performance without crushing costs or manual troubleshooting. Today, in addition to our seed funding, we’re also announcing APX: a turnkey SaaS product that leverages generative AI to automatically detect, diagnose, and fix performance issues. To learn more about APX and our funding, head on over to the StepChange blog via the link the in comments. Also, we are hiring, if you want to come build the future of performance engineering, DM me

If anyone in my network is looking for a fully remote full-stack Next.js gig, reply or DM me. We’re hiring a senior to staff-level engineer to work on a really cool AI infrastructure product. Only hiring in the USA or adjacent time zones (not EU/India).

Great example of how Majd Taby, a really great iOS dev who’s worked at top tier companies uses Claude/Cursor/ChatGPT to ship things

On the subject of AI agents, might I take a second to agree with Simon Willison’s take on how frustrating the use of this term can be. The following is taken from his excellent 2024 AI wrap uparticle: Things we learned about LLMs in 2024. Linked below.

The risk with AI benchmarks is like early 2000s graphics cards: models are tuned for benchmarks to grab attention, not real use cases. Benchmarks are just one input. Personal recommendations from skilled people I trust carry far more weight when deciding where to invest my time.

I still use Claude + Cursor for day to day development, however if you’re working on agents in production, the ability to do things 10x cheaper makes combing Claude with DeepSeek a no brainer. It also unlocks new use cases https://x.com/victortaelin/status/1873337911141396522?s=46&t=Bc9m1uknKGxrhqisx2EO2g

I’ve seen a lot of posts suggesting AI will eliminate the need for product managers, but I totally disagree. Great PMs have nothing to fear. Instilling a sense of urgency, customer empathy, good judgment, and high standards are timeless and even more critical in remote companies.

A lot of my friends are talking about DeepSeek V3: a new open model outperforming Claude Sonnet on the Aider Polyglot coding benchmark with 10x cheaper inference costs. Now you can experiment with features for $2 instead of $20—great for rapid dev workflows. Have you tried it yet? If so, any thoughts?

The USA should replace the H1B program with direct green cards for those earning $200K+ or completing a 4-year degree. As an ex-H1B holder, the program exploits workers by tying visas to employers, enabling undue pressure & control. The H1B system stops people starting companies.

Have we reached the point with AGI where it can navigate multiple airlines and bureaucracies to track down and deliver missing bags? Can it outmaneuver the human inefficiency and get the job done? Asking for a friend.

AI-era programmer productivity will prioritize tools, workflows, communication, and outcomes over deep language expertise, while timeless skills like debugging, first-principles thinking, and handling large codebases will remain invaluable.
