PAUL CÉZANNE (1839 - 1906) Cézanne worked on the series for more than five years, starting with a huge 2-meter canvas and a multi-figure composition (1), in the second painting he reduced the number to four (2), and in the rest only the most important thing remained - two rivals, a bottle they are most likely gambling on, a table and cards. Nothing superfluous or distracting, nothing transient or momentary. Only the eternal. “Card Players” (1893).

PAUL CÉZANNE (1839 - 1906) The mature work of Cézanne belongs to that stage of French painting, which art historians call “post-impressionism”. Post-Impressionists refuse from simple fixation of light phenomena, from the transfer of accurate visual sensations on the canvas. They strive for a greater synthesis of form and color, wishing to give the image a generalizing character, to express the idea of the world in general. The unassuming motif with a banal country villa acquires a special spiritualization. Architecturally constructed, severe in color landscape “The Shore of the Marne” silent solemnity. The painting came to the Hermitage in 1930 from the State Museum of New Western Art in Moscow. “Pierrot and Harlequin” (1888).

PAUL CÉZANNE (1839 - 1906) “Pierrot and Harlequin” is one of the most significant works in Paul Cézanne's oeuvre. The models were the artist's son Paul (Pierrot) and his friend Louis Guillaume (Harlequin). In this work, the painter combined a portrait with a genre painting, in which a certain subject is stated: the holiday “Mardi-Gras” - the last day of the Shrovetide carnival. “Pierrot and Harlequin” (1888).

PAUL CÉZANNE (1839 - 1906) Self-Portrait. 1890 Paul Cézanne loved changeable weather. He could not tolerate the sun for long and could not tolerate overcast skies for too long. It is said that the artist cherished his shoes so much that he put them under his head while sleeping instead of a pillow. Emil Bürle Foundation Collection, Zurich

"Marriage in Cana of Galilee" (1501). The life journey of human souls, since the fall of Adam and Eve, has been his favorite subject. The path from earthly pleasures to the torments of hell - in the slightly ironic, but so recognizable paintings of Hieronymus Bosch. Impressive are also the faces depicted in mass scenes on biblical subjects. His followers learned to paint in a similar manner, but were never able to surpass the great master.

HIERONYMUS BOSCH (1450 - 1516) The peaceful atmosphere of the painting perfectly reflects Antony's inner tranquility, and once again emphasizes the eternal triumph of piety over sin. Indeed, Antony may seem so peaceful that he may well not even be bothered by Bosch's menacing creatures invading his personal space.

HIERONYMUS BOSCH (1450 - 1516) The most incomprehensible for contemporaries and descendants among the famous artists of the Renaissance remains Bosch. His paintings are allegorical depictions of biblical images and scenes of hell with mythical creatures, half-human and half-demon at the same time.

REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (1606 - 1669) "The Prodigal Son" Rembrandt wrote a few months before his death. It's the culmination of his work. His masterpiece. In front of which a crowd gathers in the Hermitage every day. The old father has found peace again. His youngest son has returned. He does not hesitate to forgive him the squandered inheritance. No reproach. Only mercy. A father's forgiving love. "Return of the Prodigal Son" (1669).

REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (1606 - 1669) One of Rembrandt's most famous works is his painting "The Return of the Prodigal Son". But this is by no means his only painting with such a plot. Long before he wrote this canvas, he wrote the famous self-portrait "The Prodigal Son in the Tavern". Where in the role of the "prodigal son" the artist depicts himself, and the girl who sat on his lap - his wife. The artist depicted himself with a sword, dressed in a camisole. "The Prodigal Son in the Tavern" (1635).

REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (1606 - 1669) "Saskia in the image of Flora" was created in 1634. Rembrandt dedicated the painting to his future wife, whom he married in the same year when he finished the painting. "Saskia in the image of Flora" is one of the most romantic works of the author. The artist put into it a lot of secrets, charm and mysteries. With his inspiration Rembrandt met when she, in 1633, visited the City of Tulips in order to visit her cousin Altje van Eilenbyurh. At that time the girl was twenty-one years old. "Saskia in the image of Flora", painted by brush Rembrandt, is kept in the city of St. Petersburg, in the State Hermitage Museum. "Saskia as Flora" (1634).

REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (1606 - 1669) The name by which Rembrandt's group portrait of the Rifle Company of Captain Frans Banning Kock and Lieutenant Willem van Roetenburg, painted in 1642, is traditionally known. The painting was commissioned by the Rifle Society, a unit of the Dutch citizen militia who wished to decorate their new building with group portraits of the six companies. Rembrandt was commissioned to paint the portrait by the Rifle Company of Captain Frans Banning Kock and paid 1,600 florins. "Night Watch" (1642).

PABLO PICASSO (1881 - 1973) The Spaniard, one of the outstanding geniuses of the twentieth century, lived in France and left the world amazing works in different spheres. He was a designer, painter, sculptor and graphic artist. Sometimes he parodied famous masterpieces of the classics, then returned to the exploration of twentieth-century art. Experiments with the search for textures resulted in paintings complemented by scraps of old newspapers and wrapping paper in a collage on the theme of three musicians. "Three Musicians" (1921)

LEONARDO DA VINCI (1452 - 1509) The sketch was discovered in one of the Renaissance master's personal notebooks. In fact, Leonardo drew the sketch for his own research and did not even suspect that it would someday be admired. Nevertheless, today "Vitruvian Man" is one of the artist's most famous works, along with "The Last Supper" and "Mona Lisa". Leonardo Da Vinci himself did not plan and publicize his art. He kept it in his diary for his own research. A true representative of the Renaissance, Leonardo was not only a painter, sculptor and writer, but also an inventor, architect, engineer, mathematician and an expert in anatomy. This ink drawing was the result of Leonardo's study of the theories on human proportions described by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius. "Vitruvian Man" (1490).

LEONARDO DA VINCI (1452 - 1509) The Last Supper depicts the moment described in the New Testament when Jesus Christ announces that one of his disciples will betray him. Leonardo's masterpiece conveys the emotional reaction of the apostles upon hearing the news. It was created in 1495-1498 in the Dominican monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. "The Last Supper" (1495-1498).

LEONARDO DA VINCI (1452 - 1509) Upon seeing Leonardo's painting "Madonna in the Rocks", the customers were furious - what is the dirt? Where is the promised gold leaf and ultramarine? Why are there no halos over the heads of the saints? There was a conflict: the Franciscans refused to pay for the purchase of expensive paints for the painting, and Leonardo refused to give them his work for pennies. Years of litigation between the artist and the customers began. For almost twenty years, the proceedings continued - to whom the painting of the great master should belong. In the end a compromise solution was found: the unwanted painting Leonardo left himself (it later ended up in the collection of the Louvre in Paris), and especially for the Franciscan brotherhood was written a second painting, which took into account all his wishes. It is this second painting, painted twenty years after the first version, that is in London. The second picture "Madonna in the Rocks." 1508. National Gallery. London

LEONARDO DA VINCI (1452 - 1509) Instead of bright colors Leonardo chose more natural for the cave muted twilight colors, which created a kind of haze. This effect is called sfumato. For Leonardo, the real value was not in the external gloss, but in the realistic vision. There is another picture painted 20 years later, but more about it later.... "Madonna in the Rocks". 1486. CLAUDE MONET (1840 - 1926) It is believed that the idea for "Breakfast on the Grass" was born to Monet in 1865, when the artist was working in Chailly-en-Bières, near Paris. The original version, a large-scale canvas of 4×6 meters, was badly damaged by damp and improper storage and has survived only in fragments. "Breakfast on the Grass" (1866). GM
