REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (1606 - 1669) The name by which Rembrandt's group portrait of the Rifle Company of Captain Frans Banning Kock and Lieutenant Willem van Roetenburg, painted in 1642, is traditionally known. The painting was commissioned by the Rifle Society, a unit of the Dutch citizen militia who wished to decorate their new building with group portraits of the six companies. Rembrandt was commissioned to paint the portrait by the Rifle Company of Captain Frans Banning Kock and paid 1,600 florins. "Night Watch" (1642).
