PAUL CÉZANNE (1839 - 1906) Cézanne worked on the series for more than five years, starting with a huge 2-meter canvas and a multi-figure composition (1), in the second painting he reduced the number to four (2), and in the rest only the most important thing remained - two rivals, a bottle they are most likely gambling on, a table and cards. PAUL CÉZANNE (1839 - 1906) The mature work of Cézanne belongs to that stage of French painting, which art historians call “post-impressionism”. Post-Impressionists refuse from simple fixation of light phenomena, from the transfer of accurate visual sensations on the canvas. They strive for a greater synthesis of form and color, wishing to give the image a generalizing character, to express the idea of the world in general. The unassuming motif with a banal country villa acquires a special spiritualization. Architecturally constructed, severe in color landscape “The Shore of the Marne” silent solemnity. The painting came to the Hermitage in 1930 from the State Museum of New Western Art in Moscow. “Pierrot and Harlequin” (1888).

PAUL CÉZANNE (1839 - 1906) “Pierrot and Harlequin” is one of the most significant works in Paul Cézanne's oeuvre. The models were the artist's son Paul (Pierrot) and his friend Louis Guillaume (Harlequin). "Marriage in Cana of Galilee" (1501). The life journey of human souls, since the fall of Adam and Eve, has been his favorite subject. HIERONYMUS BOSCH (1450 - 1516) The peaceful atmosphere of the painting perfectly reflects Antony's inner tranquility, and once again emphasizes the eternal triumph of piety over sin. REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (1606 - 1669) The name by which Rembrandt's group portrait of the Rifle Company of Captain Frans Banning Kock and Lieutenant Willem van Roetenburg, painted in 1642, is traditionally known. LEONARDO DA VINCI (1452 - 1509) The sketch was discovered in one of the Renaissance master's personal notebooks. In fact, Leonardo drew the sketch for his own research and did not even suspect that it would someday be admired. Nevertheless, today "Vitruvian Man" is one of the artist's most famous works, along with "The Last Supper" and "Mona Lisa". Leonardo Da Vinci himself did not plan and publicize his art. He kept it in his diary for his own research. A true representative of the Renaissance, Leonardo was not only a painter, sculptor and writer, but also an inventor, architect, engineer, mathematician and an expert in anatomy. This ink drawing was the result of Leonardo's study of the theories on human proportions described by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius. "Vitruvian Man" (1490).

LEONARDO DA VINCI (1452 - 1509) Upon seeing Leonardo's painting "Madonna in the Rocks", the customers were furious - what is the dirt? Where is the promised gold leaf and ultramarine? Why are there no halos over the heads of the saints? There was a conflict: the Franciscans refused to pay for the purchase of expensive paints for the painting, and Leonardo refused to give them his work for pennies. Years of litigation between the artist and the customers began. For almost twenty years, the proceedings continued - to whom the painting of the great master should belong. In the end a compromise solution was found: the unwanted painting Leonardo left himself (it later ended up in the collection of the Louvre in Paris), and especially for the Franciscan brotherhood was written a second painting, which took into account all his wishes.
