Are standups archaic for small (remote) teams? Increasingly feel like a one weekly call is good and allow async for the rest of the week + tooling to keep everyone in the loop Any input on how to make work more pleasant for everyone is appreciated

they’re great BUT culture needs to be set that work doesn’t require the meeting. eg it’s easy to fall in a pattern of “hmm, can i do this yet? i’m not sure so i’ll just pause and wait until i can bring it up in the weekly meeting in two days”

depends on everyone’s preference and time-zone spread. I used to have a template for async updates with: yesterday, today and blockers headers. sync at least once a week though. remote teams can feel lonely, so be sure to listen and observe.

It really depends on your situation, team make up, the type of work and how you work together IMHO What is it about standup that is making you feel like it’s an unnecessary practice? And what is currently unpleasant about work that you are hoping to fix?

this has worked very for our small (~10) team for a lonnng time: "one weekly call... and allow async for the rest of the week + tooling to keep everyone in the loop"

One call a week + async > daily standup imo, esp for small focused teams. I really struggle to place what you lose when you go to weekly (besides just team bonding but idk, we've done open office/cooler chat which worked with that).

To be honest I really like daily standups. All you need to say is what you’re working on for that day and anything you’re blocked on. That’s it!

with the right team members in place one call + async is a sweet spot.

I think so. If needed, you can always jump into a call with just the required people. I even think standups have been replaced by quick telegram updates

Weekly calls can be enough for small remote teams. Using async communication and the right tools can keep everyone connected without daily standups.

I think standups are good for small teams in building phase. Sometimes, working remotely have some setbacks that knowing you have a standup to give feedback later keeps you on your toes. However, in the long run, one call a week makes sense.

We tried a once weekly meeting with async the rest of the time, but we felt like we were losing touch with each other as we had a few small groups working different projects. Added back some meetings with different focus than just a stand up status for more connection. It was better. Still working on it. 🤔

I think so, too many scheduled stand-ups ruin flow for no reason.
