I refuse to believe that you know how to scan a QR code but donโ€™t know how to use a toilet. There are signs in almost every bathroom in Japan on how to sit down and use the toilet. This is an island. You donโ€™t stumble here by accident. I canโ€™t believe this is that much of a problem. I understand people may not be familiar with the bidet washlets and need guidance, but I canโ€™t believe how many signs are about sitting down on the toilet and flushing toilet paper.

The buttons on Japanese toilets are the most confusing thing I've seen in Japan. Wouldn't mind a tutorial tbh ๐Ÿ˜…

Oh this is very interesting! Thereโ€™s 2 main reasons for this over instructions in Japan. Some years ago I read an interesting article about it: 1. The transition between the 80โ€™s to 00โ€™s in Japan was taken very seriously by the government and was especially focused around the Japan Soft power and the image of a kind and lovely place. My wife always says to me that we canโ€™t imagine how dirty was Japan in that times. When I landed here it was already a very clean country (1997) but the toilets were still a challenge for me. Japan has this strange record of transitioning from era to era in a very short time and create incredible short circuit, and the toilets use is one of that. 2. In Japan thereโ€™s a very subtle way to be polite and rude at the same time. We all know to who theyโ€™re talking to, but they use to refer to all nationalities to avoid to be considered racist or intolerant. The legend says that a precise tourist have problems with Japan rules. But itโ€™s only a legend.

'about sitting down on the toilet...' don't know how to put this, but that's far from being a common thing for men when doing number 1 in most countries in the west, even at home - here in germany seems like a 50/50, whereas brazil, for example, is a no no. just to name a couple. i was back in japan recently and definitely saw more 'sit down to use this toilet' types of signs. i obviously understand why, as every single public bathroom i went to is super clean. not the case here. so there's that. wish it was different.

Iโ€™ve never used a bidet. I wish I owned one. Iโ€™d likely need guidance on that haha. I know many people from poorer places who do not flush their toilet paper and put it in the trash. Even when they shit! Itโ€™s crazy lol

I guess it's just another quirky part of Japanese culture that shows how much care is put into every little aspect of daily life. What do you thinkโ€”do the signs make sense, or do they seem a little over the top?
