so i wanted to know for sure and not just trust reddit the sanzen paper (left) really isn’t as good as the OG tomoe river paper (right) as much as i appreciate them keeping it alive, they can’t keep claiming it’s “just as good” look how the ink bleeds through more

more context digitalization is great but it’s really sad to see parts of paper heritage fade away

the box a Nakaya pen (and most urushi pens) comes with is made of paulownia wood, which they also recommend you storing your pens in the choice of wood is intentional, despite it being more expensive than timber; it helps maintain the right humidity for the lacquer without prolonged sun & water exposure it’s also a stable wood so it’s easy to work with and won’t distort easily

why do lacquered pens come at a premium? - depending on the lacquer style (urushi, maki-e, raden, etc.) it can take months to finish since they're done by hand - particularly for urushi, the lacquer comes from the urushi tree which is hard to grow and only yields ~300ml of sap (used for the lacquer) after 12 years if you're wondering why some Pilot lacquered pens are significantly cheaper than others like Nakaya, it's because that specific model is manufactured in bulk then hand painted (whereas Nakayas are all handmade in small batches)

recently learned that the original tomoe river paper was discontinued a few years ago (some sellers still have old stock) because of declining demand that Tomoegawa couldn't manage Sanzen Paper bought the rights for ~$2M and are now producing it with a new machine, though people have said the new paper isn't as smooth as before i managed to get a notebook with the original paper ytd!!

the holy trifecta for anyone getting into fountain pens: - pen - paper - ink personally, paper is most important because seeing your ink feather or bleed through is the worst. japanese paper is the GOAT, followed by french paper

an ironic observation: there’s this burger shop near fushimi inari shrine and almost all the customers are american and they order a beer to go with their meal at 1pm there’s a lot of other local japanese food options around this store too

bought myself a cherry blossom converter to manifest my Nakaya purchase it comes in other designs too: goldfishes, maple leaves, snow flowers (a converter is what stores the ink in a fountain pen, an alternative to using disposable ink cartridges)
