Farcaster's open and permissionless data model is great while we're still a small, high-trust community. But it's fundamentally at odds with privacy. I'm not sure we've fully internalized the consequences of having a permanent history of our speech tied to our financial records.

valid point and one that i consider often, however farcaster offchain data isn't permanent and i'm afraid this reads as it is users have to pay storage per year and if you don't pay then the data is pruned

Facebook tied someone’s posts to their physical identity, and that didn’t really help maintain civility and decorum, as we’ve seen I wonder if tying someone’s posts to their wallet (and attendant chain analytics) will surface better or same behaviors

imo we will all need public and private/obfuscated wallets. We should only show what we choose to show about financial records, e.g. indicator of proof of work/stake, etc.

I see your point that is why I mainly use it for fun posts and art sharing, I think we also have to be mindfull how we use social apps these days and adapt to the times.

This is a really important thing to think about. Every bad/good decision eternalised somewhere and linked directly back to you. Thanks so much for raising this! I think we all need to keep it in mind a little more.

Great observation. Onchain is the nexus of a desire for social reputation with the desire for wealth accumulation. It’s a contradiction that is yet to resolve itself.

Privacy matters, and privacy is a choice. You do not have to be doxxed or connect your financial records to your fid. Same as you do not have to speak publicly. It’s a powerful tool that should be used wisely indeed.

Very true, but as users is good to think ahead and connect to FC only what we want to be linked to us. I for one only use 0xconca.eth address for a small % of the interactions with blockchain stuff. I learned to think of it as a public bank account, and only put stuff I do want people to see (like DEGEN or NFTs) 😄

Unsurprisingly this technology (public ledger/blockchain) is the basis for every CBDC imaginable. A perfect device of control made so that the gov can tell you what do with your money (sorry, it’s no longer yours now). Tie this to FC and you got social credit score perfectly laid out for the authorities to abuse.

I very much agree with this but this is also true for all of things Bitcoin / Ethereum What I'm most bullish in this context are FHE, and hopefully FHE co-processors that allow you to take encrypted data and run computations on A cool implementation could be an anonymous channel in farcaster
