Question for early stage founders (pre seed/seed) — do you have an advisory board? If so — is it helpful? Looking for any best practices here and whether you find it useful or not. TY!

We don’t, but do have a couple people I would call advisors. No set schedules or recurring meetings though, mostly just hit em up when we need advice hahah

No I just got to friends and investors whose opinions I trust The advisor game feels like fake work and an anti-signal. Pre-pmf, your best advisor is your customers

yes, however they’re people we formed organic relationships with that have the desire to contribute to the effort and who’s experience and relationships is directly in alignment with our purpose any pay they receive is mostly a nice bonus given i’m young, has been helpful to have older people associated too

Genuine feedback from high-quality people in your network (includes ppl you meet in targeted settings) is your advisory board

I'm lucky to have an angel VC online friend who loves what I'm working on. My sounding board is usually my wife though.

Not formally structured — preseed/seed is too early for such administrative overhead

Better off trusting your gut unless the advisor has deep knowledge of your industry/space. Most advisors offer generic advice that you can find anywhere.

No. Just talking to a bunch of frens I trust & helpful in their own arena. No need to get too formal at early stage as ur need changes quickly

No formal advisory board, however did bring on advisors to who would be impactful and glad we did that. At every stage we either sought new advisors or relied on existing network for advice

One approach to an informal advisory board is identify different areas of your business and find an expert for that area (e.g. product iteration, sales, people management, technical design) And those that prove useful, you could offer a formal advisory position

We have an advisory board, the members are people who we’ve known for some time and have a network or intuition that we don’t have ourselves. Importantly, they’re also the kind of people we’d catch up with over a dinner like friends. They have added a lot of value so far!
