More and more sites are waging a war against VPN usage

- I recently had my bank account portal locked because they detected a VPN
- I can no longer access imgur or creditkarma with a VPN turned on
- Many people are reporting issues with Reddit on a VPN (not me, yet)

Nice! I think I technically already have a subscription since I pay for Protonmail, but I usually use Mullvad. I should probably install Proton's and test them against each other

Proton's subscription level VPN is pretty good. They have a "stealth" feature in the past year that should help with being blocked.

Anecdotally my friend in Bogotá used Proton too and they also traveled a lot to BsAs so I imagine it works well there too.

yes! This is also getting super annoying. Something as stupid as the clothing website Free People requires a phone number for signup to purchase and they disallow VoIP numbers. Like damn, I'm trying to GIVE YOU money

Not sure how much value I'm getting out of using vpns and privacy emails. Most of my stuff I have to split tunnel (Bank apps, CEXs, etc) and use Gmail. Skiff and protonmail get rejected by a lot of services/websites, and vpns get picked up and blocked from access.

i still have pretty good luck with mullvad too by the way

I still struggle with VPN stuff sometimes but i rarely turn it off and split tunneling unfortunately isn't supported on MacOS. it makes me irrationally angry and indignant when i can't reach sth on a VPN and i often just refuse to use the service if i can

i guess using a smaller, less-known anonymizing service is what serves me with not being rejected often. i bet icloud hidemyemail rarely gets rejected just cuz of market dominance

my biggest vulnerability is fam and friends willy nilly giving away my email

in any case, privacy is absolutely not a given these days

great Q, i don't know! I imagine it's a mix of both but mostly being collateral damage. Sybil resistance is a problem everywhere & I imagine parties like my bank are actually just trying their best to be as secure as possible but don't actually have the most technically competitive teams & just do whatever's easiest!

Is it deliberate anti-privacy, or collateral damage from malicious traffic egressing from the same VPN IP as non-malicious traffic? Is there a way for a service to effectively protect themselves from the former without affecting the latter?

that's hilarious, it's the opposite for me! it doesn't work on brave with a VPN for me, but Firefox works just fine

Interestingly I get blocked on firefox on reddit but not on brave, maybe I have too many lock down extensions on firefox 🤷‍♂️

Mysterium vpn allows you to pay crypto to use other peoples’ home internet connection. If my proton is blocked i always jump on there and it works.
