In retrospect, the decision that did more to cripple Twitter as a reliable source of information was the elimination of the old verification system. While it was imperfect and implied a natural inegalitarianism it actually helped a lot to know who was really a government official or representative of an institution from whom accountability could be expected. It has since transformed into verification merely of who has paid $8 a month, as well as a marker of engagement-grifting for economic gain. It is hard to emphasize how damaging this is during a crisis where verifying accuracy of information is paramount. Most people, including myself, continue to use Twitter out of habit and because of sunk costs and network effects of over a decade of usage. But a new social media platform should consider some form of verification system that identifies institutional associations. That is how Twitter originally became the place where official communications happened. I doubt it'd become that again from scratch today.

I would love to see an alternate reality in which they brought on a vendor to do actual identity verification and handed out a different color badge to people who verified their identity. But the way Musk changed it along with the reply amplification for $8 subs truly turned the platform into a cesspool.

I’ve always been interested in this idea of following accounts that belong to institutions and officials instead of personalities A new congressperson could get distribution by being elected instead of needing to build an audience just to reach their constituents

You can still click a checkmark to see how a given account was verified, no?

While your point is valid. I think when you acquire a business you try to introduce new services or change existing ones to facilitate the recovery of the cost of acquiring the company. That is what he has done. We can criticise systems like this because we're not invested into it financially which is not to say that contextually it's not a problem. On the business side of things it's a smart move, but maybe not socially. But with time, who knows they'll be a separate badge for political or socially recognized entities or institutions. But till then.

Totally agree. Verified users is one of the most important unlocks we need for next gen social media. I think we're getting closer. Some good primitives in place, just need that last mile for adoption.

There are different badges on Twitter and I think the Grey badge is for politicians or government organizations which I don't think you will purchase. But the blue badge and gold has a price.

this may be one of the sharper use cases of the web3 identity stack - trusted virtual orgs issuing attestations to users about their pedigree, profession etc in certain contexts. And that being displayed as a meta data on the front end of a social media application / any other front end as well (personal websites etc.) Especially important with gen AI bots flooding socials

One of the beautiful things of this ecosystem is the public ledger. I certainly agree with your take, but we somewhat already have the verification you are looking for. For example, hodlceo.eth is me, and my brand/company is hodlhq.eth Both of these are connected to farcaster so you can expect anything casted out of those to be official. The fun part is being able to make subdomains, so I could also have the name ceo.hodlhq.eth as a way of validating my position at the company, or I could give you maz.hodlhq.eth as our news caster. I'm going to dm you a bit more in detail about this 🫡

The nice thing about FC is that someone could create a 3rd service which did something like verify users and expose it in an API. The hard part would then be convincing clients (like Warpcast) to expose this badge to end users. Of course anyone could make their own client which does this too.

I like how Bluesky allows for DNS verification. Warpcast’s ENS verification is also good but with so few major brands onboarded to ENS it’s less trustworthy.

Our concerns about X are that Elon is turning it into a platform that pushes his own ideology and politics onto everyone’s throats. It’s a dangerous platform for real democracy and freedom of speech, filled with garbage posts and hateful content.
