Tipping is simply a way to force consumers to subsidize low wages paid by employers. I also give an automatic 15-20% and it has nothing to do with service it’s more like a situation where I feel the server is being held hostage and I have to pay their ransom. A just leader should intervene to end this abominable practice.

In equilibrium, I think all three sides end up getting the same amount of money. If the tip is 20%, customers choose where/whether to go based on the price including that, and so prices paid end up the same. And then for the servers, the choice of whether to work at a restaurant or elsewhere is based on total compensation, and so the tip-inclusive comp in the tip case would balance out to the same as the comp in the no-tip case. (though I'm sure there's psychological effects that make the outcomes _not quite_ equal, and *volatility* in income is bad for servers) So it's not really injustice per se so much as a pointless and second-order harmful rube goldberg machine. From the perspective of each individual interaction, a tipping default definitely makes non-tipping feel mean and I'm sure that's a big part of why it's sticky.

there are also some tax considerations. many recipients of "cash" tips don't report them on their taxes, although they are required to by law. not sure that is as significant a factor now that most tips are added to the checkout electronically.

The best "pro-tipping" argument I've heard is that it encourages spending by making things seem cheaper than they are, and encouraging spending is good for the economy. Not sure that I buy it, but it's the most charitable case one could make for it.

We need a tipping cultural reset for a generation or so in the states. In New Zealand it works mostly as intended, you give a tip for exceptional service but it's not expected.

Tipping culture is just assigning part of the business risk to the employees, where as better salary and no tipping would put all risk into the employer. In my country is starting to mimic the US and it sucks IMO

Do you ask sometimes if this tip goes to waiter or owner? maybe in USA there’s no restaurant with that kind of tip thing where owners steal tips.

see this more as a western or probably american only phenomenon. in india, i see tipping amount as function of how much the person can afford and how good the service was.
