Tipping is simply a way to force consumers to subsidize low wages paid by employers. I also give an automatic 15-20% and it has nothing to do with service it’s more like a situation where I feel the server is being held hostage and I have to pay their ransom. A just leader should intervene to end this abominable practice.

there are also some tax considerations. many recipients of "cash" tips don't report them on their taxes, although they are required to by law. not sure that is as significant a factor now that most tips are added to the checkout electronically.

thats an interesting point, I wonder how the calculation of tips digitally may be changing the tax reporting requirements

+1 the server gets more money, the restaurant has to pay less, and this is how it rolls (source: had friends who worked as bartenders and waiters as well as two of my friends ran bars and restaurants)
