Tipping is simply a way to force consumers to subsidize low wages paid by employers. I also give an automatic 15-20% and it has nothing to do with service it’s more like a situation where I feel the server is being held hostage and I have to pay their ransom. A just leader should intervene to end this abominable practice.

In equilibrium, I think all three sides end up getting the same amount of money. If the tip is 20%, customers choose where/whether to go based on the price including that, and so prices paid end up the same. And then for the servers, the choice of whether to work at a restaurant or elsewhere is based on total compensation, and so the tip-inclusive comp in the tip case would balance out to the same as the comp in the no-tip case. (though I'm sure there's psychological effects that make the outcomes _not quite_ equal, and *volatility* in income is bad for servers) So it's not really injustice per se so much as a pointless and second-order harmful rube goldberg machine. From the perspective of each individual interaction, a tipping default definitely makes non-tipping feel mean and I'm sure that's a big part of why it's sticky.

I find something about the predictability of eating out in Japan psychologically comforting. It just feels like a more economically transparent system and I also feel that the workers are more comfortable and satisfied. May be an illusion but that is the impression.
