Do people actually consciously make a judgement about quality of service when they tip??!

I always just mindlessly add 15-20%. So the whole "tipping incentivizes quality of service" argument has always seemed unrealistic to me.

Tipping is simply a way to force consumers to subsidize low wages paid by employers. I also give an automatic 15-20% and it has nothing to do with service it’s more like a situation where I feel the server is being held hostage and I have to pay their ransom.

A just leader should intervene to end this abominable practice.

The best "pro-tipping" argument I've heard is that it encourages spending by making things seem cheaper than they are, and encouraging spending is good for the economy. 

Not sure that I buy it, but it's the most charitable case one could make for it.
