As I’ve alluded to on here before after 11 years I’m leaving The Intercept to help launch a new platform, Drop Site News. It’s a bittersweet moment for me since I helped start The Intercept and really I grew up there.

But I’m excited about helping start another new independent news outlet with my old colleagues Ryan Grim and Jeremy Scahill. Less than a month into its launch Drop Site News is already banned from access in Pakistan. You can still access it via VPN but it’s a signal of how much our reporting has infuriated the military government there.

I’m banned from lots of countries by the way everyone seems to be mad at me but I take that as a sign that my stories hit hard — a bit of a badge of honor. Onwards!

We got a notice from them telling us we’d be banned and then we got some people over there to confirm it’s true

Out of interest - how do you know/find out you’re banned from a country?

Something @balajis.eth once said in a podcast that stuck with me is that no pre-internet institution will survive the internet except the CCP which had the foresight to build the Great Firewall as a means of self-preservation.

Is that usually due to governments controlling information that’s spread?

It's a badge of honour then, for which you should be congratulated. Darkness never wants light, so it's understandable that they don't want Drop Site News poking.

I really respect this and all journalists that are disengaging from traditional media and doing articles on their own (substack etc) on their own terms. We need this. Cheers.
