I often hear people say they want to move out of the city to raise kids. But ironically the best place I can think of for my future kids to grow up would be Manhattan. That’s what I would have wanted for myself if I had known it was an option.

I grew up in Manhattan and after leaving for a few years for school, I 100% agree that I wouldn’t want to raise my kids anywhere else Totally get why folks like the suburban life & that it’s not easy to live in NYC, but I feel like growing up in a big city gave me a world view and experiences I’ll never forget

I thought the same. But as I was raising my kids in the city I found that many things were driving them toward a sedentary and unhealthy lifestyle. They didn’t roam the city freely as I did. Their default was indoors and online. We moved to a small town in the mountains and now outdoor activity is the default.

why? for me, it was awesome to go out and just play in nature (football, hide & seek, learn to bike, rollerskate, etc.) when I was 3ish years old.

Would consider moving to a bigger city when the kids are all teenagers. Right now medium city plus good access to nature/parks is better. Best part is safety

revealed preference: UWS public school tbf it's not exactly what we expected when we planned our future. Peak: walking distance to world-class museums. Also huge: immigrant-family classmates who learned 100 digits of pi in 2nd grade. Trough: masturbating drug addicts catcalling moms+nannies pushing baby strollers

I feel at middle/highschool age city is best, but from a young age I’d much rather have my kids in nature and form that connection with it early There were inner city kids my mother worked with who’d never seen a cow in real life! They were in highschool, which is incredibly sad and has stuck with me for years.

Ultimate lifestyle for a kid is being able to walk outside their door and go play with friends w/o needing a chaperone or driver. Or bike to school/soccer practice/ etc. Manhattan is probably better than most suburbs on this front. America in general seems very far behind other countries tho.

City living involves a LOT of sacrifices. I have no regrets moving back to the suburbs: better schools, cheaper housing, cheaper food, relatively safer, etc... The one thing I truly miss is the walkability/density.

Yeah, I don’t think you wanna be in Manhattan right now or anywhere near New York City . I mean unless you’re immigrant… illegal, or otherwise

You ought to see how you're thinking once you have kids. I can see anyone debating why the city could be terrible but I respect anyone who has their reasons for better living in a city--exposure to a lot of culture, lot of people, ideas, etc. That said, I wanted to live in a city too and moved out to suburbs.
