Do any of you bet on sports? Why do you think political betting took off onchain before sports betting? What problems would being onchain solve for sports betting? It probably won’t help the reputation of crypto, but sports betting feels like the next obvious onchain use case.

Not sure it’s an accurate statement given Stake.com Just because not available in the US doesn’t mean it’s not happening

Sports betting is well served by existing providers. Political markets have existed but have been less liquid. Polymarket have won that segment, and also runs open order books which means more trading than you can on a trad platform. Maybe they can do sports now too.

Political betting I think was less regulated previously (not a big enough market), so I think easier for teams to take a shot at it whereas most crypto sports betting I think would be sort of illegal from day 1 Long-term though I'm super bullish on a fully onchain, decentralized sports betting ecosystems where the market sets lines rather than sports books

agree i’ve found @bookies to be pretty good right on here, the even lines and simply pairing each side without any take rate is a massive unlock

Sports betting is HIGHLY regulated and that regulation is fractured. IMO, it’s a quick way to incur massive fines or worse. Political betting is not really a thing offchain, so it’s easier to experiment with. Being onchain, it’d ease a lot of user friction introduced by said regulation, but now catch-22.

I think it’s because sports betting is already accessible off chain, with lots of well established companies offering it. Political betting is a new behavior that hasn’t really existed in any meaningful way, and there aren’t big existing markets for it.

Sports betting is legal and decent in the US. Politics betting is not legal in the US. Crypto and anonymity is a huge unlock for that.

I guess degens are getting the dopamine fix from meme coins. On chain sports betting doesn’t solve any problems but it’s guaranteed to create problems for the degen gamblers and their loved ones.

Currently, there are already a lot of existing platforms that exists for sports betting offchain that work. In addition, the regulatory hurdle surrounding sports betting makes it a even harder challenge. There are a lot of issues that onchain sports betting will solve but the most important is the misaligned incentives between the platform and the user. From first principles, blockchains remove intermediaries and allow for trustless settlement of transactions. While we think the knee jerk reaction to this realization was to create DeFi (disintermediate banking), we believe a less obvious application is the disintermediation of the sportsbook, who charge high fees and ban profitable bettors at their discretion.
