Get rid of their individual-owned car and work to transform it into a pedestrian-first community.

this is going to sound corny, but imho walking & talking with force of numbers changes a lot of the dynamic. buying local helps a lot, word of mouth + sharing gig opportunities is improvement that pays for itself later on. tangible = nth order effects as well (imho).

Talk to the people, identify a problem, solve it

Volunteer at a local homeless shelter or services center. I don’t think NIMBY would exist if people got to know people

Procure all your food from local sources. Buy from brick-and-mortar retailers nearby.

You not only help the local community, you also decrease your footprint for the sake of the global community.
