Who was I talking with on here about how a lot of dentists are con artists and scammers? Dentists are scammers. https://kffhealthnews.org/news/article/dental-implants-investigation-failures-unnecessary-healthy-teeth/

As a daughter of a dentist and a dental assistant and a sister of an endodontist, not all dentists are scammers. But anyone pulling teeth except in extreme cases probably is. Dad would do everything possible to save a tooth. 🦷 he would call out shady characters when he saw them and always pushed prevention. That said — the profession got progressively more business-a-fied over the years. Private dentists are better than chains but harder to find. If you find a good one, hang on tight. My dad died 7 years ago and stopped practicing a few years before that. It took me about a decade to find a good one again.

Haven’t been in years. Not going back to a dentist unless I’m about to die.

Stories like this make me wonder if humanity is losing integrity or it’s just that lack of integrity is becoming more visible. Either way, not a good feeling.

I think more and more “profit seeking” individuals are grifting their way into businesses. Doesn’t matter the business. Dentist. Lawyers. Plumbers. VCs. Priests. Doesn’t matter MEV isn’t just in crypto

Terrifying. Pretty sure I've dealt with unscrupulous dentists before and I just didn't go back to them. Wish I was told all the preventative teeth info I know now when I was younger.

yeah, anytime a dentist tells you to pull a tooth, get a second opinion from an endodentist who specializes in root canals, ideally microscopic. they can often save teeth and avoid unnecessary implants. same thing with many dental procedures, go find a specialist in that particular niche of treatment e.g. wisdom teeth or whatever.

I was just talking to my mum about the local dentist situation. There is our family dentist, she's amazing, super-fair pricing, friendly, always trying to find the best options for her patients, no fuzz. She was doing well. Then one of the other dentists she studied with sets up shop, on purpose very close, sets up super fancy studio, lots of screens, x-rays, futuristic shit. People get fancy images, aggressively asks for reviews to go up the google rankings. Mum - new in town - goes there, is told she needs some crazy expensive treatments, what not. In disbelief, she goes finds a second opinion. Fortunately for us, it ended up being the dentist all of our family has been going to now for 20 years. The one who was fair, and reasonable. Unfortunately also the one under constant threat from her more money-hungry counterpart... Maybe that's how in the end the scammers persist. Idk.

Having sensed this for a while it’s nice to see this exposed. Teeth & hips 🤦 That said, I recently had a crown put in (yesterday lol) & on first visit was expecting to need a second opinion. The tech is sooooo good I could clearly see this tooth needed it. Maybe ask about their imaging technology before picking a dentist 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s almost like requiring everything to be profit-motivated over everything else isn’t a good thing 🤔 I know my dentist is aiming to max out my benefits so I have to take their advice with a grain of salt. Such a sad state of affairs for someone I hire to be my expert.

I shared in a similar cast that I had a friend whose childhood dentist in Anchorage got caught drilling holes in patients’ teeth so he could charge for treating “cavities”. He was eventually caught and sued to oblivion.

Every time I hear this, I think of the book Dr. DeSoto which is about a mouse dentist who tricks a fox who is planning on eating him after periodontic surgery into cementing his mouth shut.

It would be nice if the barrier to entry to see a dentist wasn't so high. Each time you switch you have to plan for about an hour of annoying xrays and waiting. I was told in Feb '23 I had a cavity by my current dentist. It was right before we moved and I never ended up finding a new dentist until recently. I was sure that I was going to have all sorts of issues identified during my recent cleaning, but they didn't see any, which definitely has me scratching my head now with all these anecdotes/data about inconsistencies with dental care.
