Nothing embodies the attitude of capital to me more than what’s happening at Vail There is no longer a sense that money is earned by providing value. It’s financial engineering and how can I degrade quality while charging the same price. Capital will squeeze both customers and labor as hard as they can. In this case, because the customers are rich, it’s turning into a whole thing now https://x.com/NewtBurp/status/1875708739262804453

Just seems like a really poor PR choice… to be a fly on the wall to those conversations if who thought this was the right line to draw in the sand.

wild. I hadn’t seen the strike news. I grew up going to Vail and lift tickets were less than $100. They’ve been slow boiling that market to extract every last dollar possible for a long time. Crazy that it seems to just keep working for them.

Couldn’t agree more. And more so as this squeeze works its way up in the skills ladder. Obvious example is PE with physician groups. But also home services like HVAC and plumbing are seeing the same impact. There is opportunity for independent high quality services. But it’s tough. Not sure the end game.

in theory this is supposed to be balanced by antitrust and some other stuff. In practice....... well, all I'll add is that the best part of the whole situation is the money used to finance this entire thing is almost entirely pensions and they're frequently used as live hostages whenever anything bad happens to ~PE

crypto's biggest potential lies in enabling new governance and incentives structures; either an organization is driven by the people close to it or it's captured by extractive outsiders, there's very rarely anything in between
