I have this one friend who I talk to on the phone a lot. I was telling them about how another friend of mine told me I shouldn't be able to vote (because I'm childless) In reply he asked me why I wanted to vote so bad anyways. "Why do you need to be enfranchised this way?" I didn't really have a good answer, certainly not to him. To me voting feels like it makes you a part of society. And to be deprived of that is the state's way of telling you that you don't count. But maybe it doesn't matter, that you don't matter to them.

Why would being childless make any difference to your interest in how the country is run, such a weird concept to me. In Australia, voting is compulsory and even though it’s annoying sometimes, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What was your friend's reason for thinking that childless people shouldn't be able to vote? And does his reasoning stand for any person over 18 who doesn't have a child?

I’ll say this, if they’re gonna take away anyone’s right to vote, they better remove any and all taxes they expect to extract from said person. No taxation without representation.

Your feeling is correct. To be deprived of the vote *is* saying you don't count. And while that count is diluted by power imbalances, it's still important. If it wasn't, people wouldn't be trying to take it away.

Voting impacts the here and now as much as the future, Also, this idea that only people that have children have a stake is patently stupid. There are a shit ton of selfish parents that aren't invested in their kids and people without children that are incredibly charitable and selfless. In fact, having a child can also be a burden society if you don't care for them, so how does that entitle you to anything based purely on the act? Complete bullshit.

to me it is feeling the responsibility toward my self, my society and my country, also it is my way to express to say no to those who I don't agree with their perspective.

Uhm what? I feel like America started because people wanted to vote. No taxation without representation, right? If I don’t have a vote I’m way more likely to revolt, so it’s in everyone’s best interest that I have one.

Who is "them" to you? When I think of the "State" I think of my neighbors and fellow countrymen, and I think on average those groups do care about other's opinions and personal experiences and rely on a large scale extrapolation of those in order to make policy decisions.

You count, your voice counts, and your vote counts, I don’t understand why your other friend will say something like that
