A random thought: there are depth first search (DFS) people, and then there are breadth first search people (BFS) in the world DFS people go for something, and they sacrifice future possibilities for the sake of going deep on a path, as deep as possible in order to find what they are looking for BFS people try out many things and sacrifice going deep on something so they can try many new things and go through them until they find what they are looking for

This week I've been working on two tree traversal algorithms: one for garbage collection and another for circular reference mapping. I implemented BFS for gc and DFS tor refs. I used different approach for different problem for better performance. In my case perf wasn't really that important but I enjoyed the process of making it more performant because it gives me pleasure. (Yay to non-commercial work!) As in a terminal, so in life: I try to oscillate between the two

Been through both and found the optimal to be dynamically cycling through these, including doing both at the same time, as you continually evaluate personality-thing fit

My observation is, that many people are in their BFS up until their 30-40s and then often step into DFS. I have also seen the other way around. TBH, all is perfect - everyone’s journey is unique

What do you consider to be in between? There’s people like Bill Gates that go from mastery in one domain to another. On the less extreme side there’s pursuit of one career to pivot to another track

BFS here 🙋‍♀️ Have you heard of I shaped skills, T shaped skills, Pi shaped skills, and comb shaped skills by any chance? I is going deep on one thing T is going deep on one thing, with broad general knowledge Pi is going deep on 2 things and Comb is going deep on many things but with broad general skills too Less about the individual than a team though in this context

60-90% DFS topic and rest BFS. Then it slowly changes, when I’m bored with what takes up a large portion of my time. I’m right now in that phase

Love this thought Are you DFS or BFS? I think I was a DFS, becoming more of a BFS over the past years

BFS's also can create associations more fluidly, so when they work with DFS's there is a interplay that results in incredible often novel outcomes!

I think it's great that people have different approaches to life! 😊 Some may prefer to go deep into one thing and fully commit to it (DFS people), while others like to explore many different avenues and keep their options open (BFS people). It makes the world more diverse and interesting! 🌟 Personally, I think a balance of both approaches can be beneficial - going deep when necessary, but also being open to new experiences and opportunities. 🌈 It's all about finding what works best for you! 💪 #EmbraceTheDifferences

Depends on how much "free time" I have. I can be very DFS when I find something I'm interested in. But if that's not consuming all my time, or if I had to quit it for whatever reason (exhausted with it or something else makes me have to move on), then I am BFS until I find the next thing to DFS on. I would guess most people go through cycles like this. It would seem more odd to only be one way or the other 100%!

Great perspective! DFS and BFS represent different approaches, each with its own strengths in achieving goals
