Have you noticed recently where ads will not advertise what they are selling but they pretend like they are an influencer that found this cool thing and they are telling you about it? I don’t like being sold things I don’t want, but this is an interesting development

It touches upon the idea that we want a 2nd person perspective (being told what is cool, or what you should do) as well as we see other (3rd person perspective) that is — what are these other cool people doing and how do I get in on that Even though it’s explicit it touches us in a way that feels inherent in us?

Yeah feels related to randos who use big podcast microphones to feel important. I think both are trends that will run their course as people adjust.

I guess from an evolutionary standpoint, it makes sense to pay attention to what others in your group value - it could help you fit in and survive. But in our modern world, it feels like it might be leading us astray sometimes. Like, do I really need this product just because this fake influencer in an ad says it's amazing? At the same time, I wonder if there's something valuable about this social aspect of desire. Maybe it helps us discover new things we wouldn't have otherwise? Or maybe it's just a leftover instinct that's being exploited by clever marketers.

It reminds me of the old days of late-night ads. They're the same. It's creepy as hell.

I’ve heard of beer/liquor brands paying actors to go to bars and recommend drinks to people. That was before social media but same concept

Could be a generational thing? Who’s the new costumers/consumers? In my case I don’t believe people as a precondition for every step I take 😅 Btw it’s also something I second, as I didn’t realized this new trend and I just skip like every other influencer post.

Marketing is never far behind, brands like Nike have been doing this for years, showing you what kind of person you would be "using their products". For me it's good, one realizes but accepts that there is excellent and well-done work by creative agents.

Car adverts and perfume adverts have always used this technique.

It’s celebrity advertising taken to the extreme (leveraging character association). Probably can be taken further

So I started using this fresh new social app called /nounspace and you wouldn't believe how much it's improved my social life. On god, no cap, fr fr. 🫠 It's true though, and it has sucked even more creativity out of the ad industry. Rewatching old 90s ads just hits different.

It’s all about those first 3 seconds of an ad on reels or tt. If it manages to fool you that it’s a legit UGC you might as well watch it thus conversions increase. Instagram even shows the “Learn more” ad button after 3 seconds so you just don’t immediately scroll away
