depends on the season but Tokyo ➡️ Hakone ➡️ Kyoto ➡️ Fukuoka + day trips in between or along the way. If you’re going late spring/summer Hokkaido is amazing.

- Week in Tokyo, could do in one go or split on front and back end of trip and stay in two different parts of city. I like Naka-meguro/daikanyama. Stay near JY line loop for easy access to transit. No shortage of eat / drink / art / design / shop and easy to go to neighborhood and wander all day - 3-4 days in Kyoto, downtown for cute walking eating drinking, short drives for hikes / temples / etc - 2-3 days in more nature-y thing near one of them, eg Naoshima, or onsen north of Tokyo. I’ve not done but I’m sure you can find suggestions - alt could do 2-3 days in Osaka which is fun but I’ve only spent 1 night there. Some people love, some people meh

I recommend spending a night or 2 in Kobe, hiking mount rokko the long way to the onsen baths and then taking a train back to town, cleaning up and going to a kobe beef dinner at Mouriya I also recommend visiting the rock garden in kyoto

I’m Japanese, but it was pretty tough to come up with a perfect plan—sorry 😵‍💫 But the other replies seem solid. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

Check the cherry blossom forecast and see if you can be there for hanami. The north part of the main island and Hokkaido will be flowering in April. https://n-kishou.com/corp/news-contents/sakura/?lang=en

Check on the weather in Okinawa in May, I think it's still pretty decent. If so, and it's your first trip, just keep it simple: Tokyo-kyoto, then some beach time in Okinawa. Shibuya, akihabara, Temple of the Golden pavilion, hit the highlights. Save Osaka for a future trip so you can draw interesting contrasts. (Source: lived there about four years)

Kansai region in April. Osaka: Eat okinami yaki, walk the canal downtown, picnic under the cherry blossoms at Osaka castle. Feed the deer in Nara. Eat Kobe beef in Kobe. Visit the gold temple in Kyoto and explore the old town.
