is there a difference between a “software developer” and a “software engineer” ?

the bots are right, the titles are interchangeable but i've always thought of it as "developer writes/maintains code, and an engineer designs solutions" but no one really thinks of it that way anyways

Some jurisdictions have protections around titles. “Engineer” is a protected title in Canada, but almost no one that programs in Canada has an engineering degree. Hence “Developer” as the title.

There isn't a clear distinction but for me I like to think of coder/developer as a mechanic. They can fix cars and even assemble them but they won't design a new type of car or make substantial design improvements. Then you have the software engineers who are closer to the mechanical and automotive engineers who can design new cars from scratch or make substantial optimization. Then you have the computer scientists that are like the physicists that go low level to come up with new battery tech, motors, computation and whatever else is needed at the physics level to improve cars.

Joel Spolsky always used to say that developers are anyone who's coding, but engineers have the degree

engineering is a title, (spain) developer just write code, I guess that a developer pretending to be a engineer could be seen as a crime here 🤔 personally and related to blockchain those who write the core are engineers and those who write smart contracts for dapps are more like developers ?!

Similar difference to a “sound producer” and a “sound engineer”. Have slightly different localized interpretations (generally credential related,) but their work can be interchangeable.

There is no significant difference. The skill level of an individual who develops software is more accurately differentiated by the tools and techniques they are capable of wielding.

It should mean that the developer is like an indie hacker and the engineer works for a big company but it doesn’t

In my corporate job a software developer writes code and a software engineer set up the environment the software was going to run on and worked on the methods how the software solution should be fixed
