Any credit card nerds here? Trying to decide between Chase Saphire Reserve and Amex Gold Want to optimize for 1) travel 2) signup bonus 3) food Chase is more expensive but has free citi bikes which is clutch for NYC

Sapphire Reserve for sure, although I’d also consider Sapphire Preferred if you wanna save on the annual fee while getting many of the same perks. Gold isn’t a great travel card, you won’t get any lounge access or TSA PreCheck like you would with Sapphire Reserve. Chase points are also easier to get value out of

Chase for travel, Amex for groceries/restaurants

Get the Chase (I’d go for the preferred) Chase is much more restrictive on applications, you can get an Amex later much more easily. Optimizing for SUB is the best strategy + sign up for a new card once you hit spend. The extra percent you eke out on categories is much less than bonuses

for years i flew exclusively on alaska, buying all flights w/ the alaska card and using csr (a partner) for everything else. flew multiple first class flights on emirates & cathay (also partners). they cut ties w/ emirates but still do redemptions on cathay. may no longer be an optimal strategy but worth looking into

Go with the Sapphire Reserve, it’s what I’ve got and comes with good travel benefits like never having to worry about travel insurances. Also I’m biased.

I use AmEx platinum for airfares, AmEx gold for dining and grocery, and hotel/etc specific cards for each chain, Amazon card for Amazon/Whole Foods. For uncategorized spend, 2% cash back is probably the best, although I’ve been using AmEx delta reserve to earn MQM bonuses or sometimes platinum just out of laziness.

if you choose Chase, I will send you the promo code. 1) I only use it for travel 2) use it _only_ for 3 months and you get $500 3) dashpass for 12 months, points on every restaurant is that a good enough pitch?

Chase SR bc of frequent travel. But...AMEX typically gives you longer runway on getting the sign up bonus & likely has the edge on food+travel. If you need to get into the nitty gritty, there are a couple of good gpt web search plugins.

AMEX platinum if you live in a Delta hub and Uber a lot. FYI their signup bonuses are “once per lifetime” X1 can regularly return 3%+ IF you off-ramp points thru one of their 1c/pt redemption partners X1 was just acq by $HOOD so points deval likely incoming
