Been thinking a lot about this movie lately. I don't think it was intentional, but its a great metaphor for unaligned AI. The score is also epic. One of the members of Portishead was a co-composer. ♥️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89OP78l9oF0

I had such high hopes for it but it fell flat for me upon seeing. (Happens sometimes even when all the individual pieces are outstanding — director, concept, acting, score, etc)

Oh, I totally need to go give this a re-watch. For me, this movie has often lingered in my thoughts (particularly the ending scene with the creature that mirrors her) as a metaphor for a relationship with a psychotherapist. Someone mirroring one's inner structures back, amplifying them, and thereby highlighting all the self blocking behaviours. But by extension, I totally love your metaphor of unaligned AI...perhaps when the therapist misses the point, goes off the rails, and the reflections still block, but they are not you...just noice (or unaligned shadow). So cool. Thanks for prompting this back into my thoughts. (BTW: do you ever work on film score @gigamesh)

I strongly recommend reading "The Southern Reach Trilogy" by Jeff VanderMeer which it is based. So much more strangeness, brilliance and wyrd harmonies to tune in on. The Film actually does a surprisingly good job but it is only the surface. Coincidently an unexpected fourth book just got added to the trilogy: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/oct/30/absolution-by-jeff-vandermeer-review-a-thrilling-coda-to-an-otherworldly-trilogy

Given that it's by the same guy who did Ex Machina, I'm guessing it's not accidental.

Alex Garland did a great interpretation of the books, because the way the books were written it's kind of unfilmable.. so the film is different but great. The books do explain some important plotholes in the film, like why the heck is this expedition all women? And NO it has NOTHING to do with wokeness..
