Annihilation appears to be answering question “what if earth had cancer” which is it it’s own kind of misaligned intelligent system where controls have been relaxed.

Yeah I’m sure it crossed his mind. It’s based on a book from 2014 though and there aren’t any references to AI in the wikis.
